Cyclists
1. Why do we need to have bicycle boxes at intersections?
Cyclists and their passengers are some of the most vulnerable road users. More than 1,000 cyclists are injured in crashes with motor vehicles each year. These new rules aim to improve their safety when riding with traffic.
Bicycle boxes allow cyclists to wait ahead of traffic at signalised intersections and to get a head start on motor vehicles. This way, drivers can more easily see cyclists.
It is important to note that not all intersections have bicycle boxes in the left and right lanes of an intersection. When there is only a bicycle box in front of the left lane, cyclists can use this to turn left or ride straight through the intersection. To turn right, cyclists should join the line of traffic in the right lane or perform a hook turn.
